I created this image in September of 2004. It was my 31st birthday and I spent it at home in bed, recovering from eye surgery. When the painkillers wore off, I became aggravated—mostly because I couldn’t leave the house being half-blind.

So I sat down at the computer to take out my frustration on some photos. I spent most of the day gritting my teeth and staring at a blurry computer screen with no clear idea of what I was creating.

Weeks later, when my vision recovered, I found this picture among the collection of bizarre images that resulted from my “blind session.” If you look carefully you will see the outline of a woman’s face. Her name is Katerina and she is a circus performer from Russia….but that’s another story altogether.
