Sometimes, to lift my spirits, I will flip through pictures of past travels and begin to imagine myself on a new adventure. It was during one of these nostalgic episodes that I came across the original version of this photo.
I took it on Christmas day in Campeche, Mexico. I had wandered into the town’s main plaza expecting some activity, but I found myself the only person there. The pillared corridors of the colonial buildings were eerily vacant, so I photographed them to distract my mind.
I don’t know how I distorted this image, but I remember being shocked when I first created it. Today, this picture remains a favorite among my friends and family—and it reminds me not to be afraid of the strange realities that emerge when exploring the unknown.
