I once knew a girl from Estonia named Nele. She came during a turbulent time in my life, and I found her openness and vulnerability was startling. I can honestly say I have never known anyone who trusted me so completely—and perhaps so naively.

This image is a distortion of a photo I took of her one afternoon. Though unrecognizable as a person, it still suggests something human and natural – both hidden and exposed at the same time. It suits her well because, though somewhat shy, she always liked being observed. At least by me.  In some ways this abstract image reveals her more honestly than a studio portrait ever could.
