THE EXTREME HOTEL –
A FITNESS & ADVENTURE WONDERLAND
This increasingly popular travel destination attracts fitness enthusiasts and value-savvy jetsetters who want to get fit and stay stoked on the Caribbean sports-adventure-of-a-lifetime. I sometimes describe the Extreme Hotel as an alternative eco-resort meets fitness boot camp. But cooler. And a lot more fun.
The Extreme Hotel just won the 2014 TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Award for Best Caribbean Budget Hotel for more than one reason.
First, imagine a beach-front budget resort that offers all the adventure of staying at an international hostel, with surf-inspired rooms, private outdoor decks, complimentary bottled water service, and access to a shared kitchen.
Now throw in a Kitesurfing school, a massive skateboard half-pipe, and an open air yoga studio where you can zen-out all day to the sound of the wind and waves.
As someone who has practiced Mysore, Hatha, and Bikram in some fantastic studios around the world, I still say the Extreme Hotel’s waterfront “yoga bungalow” continues to be one of my favorites. Why? Because I love the smell and sound of the sea. It helps me meditate. It helps me relax. And that’s a big part of what yoga is all about. Include an open-air, beachfront restaurant & bar that serves organic food all day long. If you love the starchy, fattening foods typically served on cruise ships or at commercial resorts, be warned: The Extreme Hotel is committed to preparing local, sustainable, whole-food dishes fresh everyday.
At the Extreme Hotel whole-food nutrition matters – its just part of the lifestyle. Come expecting mostly organic, local fare (fresh meats, fish, vegetables, fruit, beans and rice) that can be tailored to Paleo, Vegetarian, Vegan, and Gluten Free diets.
It gets even better. Killer Mojitos and cold $2 beers served up all day long, by the beach or by the pool, your choice, accompanied by eclectic mix of Latin, Caribbean, and Reggae tunes that set the surf-inspired mood perfectly. A situation like this is approaches perfection in my book.
There’s more! The Rogue Fitness CrossFit gym and outdoor flying Trapeze provide an opportunity for both serious fitness and serious acrobatics activities. It’s also worth noting that The Extreme Hotel is a solar-powered “eco-resort” that recycles all waste, and composts the fertilizer for the onsite Aquaponics systems. An off-site, “Permaculture” Farm, located 30 minutes from the hotel, provides the organic vegetables for your nutrition-driven meal program.
A tour of the 10 acre farm is a great day-trip nature budget adventure, where you can see ‘old-school’ meets ‘new-school’ assimilation of sustainable farming technology. The farm tour also includes an innertube float (with beer!) on the Yasica River, and an amazing vegetarian lunch made by the interns the Taino Farm Environmental Education program.
But kitesurfing, cliff jumping, all the eco-friendly mojito drinking aside, what the Extreme Hotel is really becoming famous for is the 7-day “Transformation Vacation” fitness camps targeted at people who want a complete lifestyle-changing experience. With daily coaching from world-class trainers, a nutrition-driven meal plan tailored to your needs, and unlimited CrossFit, yoga, and meditation classes everyday, these programs make sure you leave your vacation with the foundations of a healthier fitness-focused lifestyle
With private rooms starting at only $50 per night for a 7-day experience, its easy to see why the Extreme Hotel is known as one of the Caribbean’s best values for a world-class fitness adventure.
Overall, I found the 21 Waterfalls Aqua Hike to be one of the main highlights of my stay in Cabarete. This epic, day-trip budget adventure was unlike anything I had ever seen in places like Hawaii, Bali, Costa Rica or Brazil. Imagine sliding down natural rock water chutes, floating through underwater caves and tunnels, and then jumping or climbing down a series of 21 different waterfalls.
If you arrive early enough to miss the crowds and be the first one to jump down the falls, you will find yourself transported into a pre-Jurrasiac looking world where nature, water and adrenaline come together in a perfect harmony. For only $85 (with lunch and transportation) it is one of the coolest budget adventure travel activities I’ve done anywhere in the world.
